Berkeley Preventive Dentistry
Preventive dentistry's primary focus is patient education so that one can maintain healthy, beautiful teeth throughout a lifetime. This includes chosing the right toothpaste (dentifrice), discussing manual vs. ultrasonic toothbrushes, frequency of fluoride exposure, proper flossing technique and frequency, and risk assessment (every patient is different). Together these encompass what dentists call Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI). We will thoroughly discuss OHI during your exams with your hygienist and dentist. After we teach you OHI it is often helpful for you to demonstrate to us how you brush and floss so that we are confident that you are using these devices effectively.
